A young woman Susan George jumps from a window and bolts through town and countryside to escape a group of pursuers. Her name is Marianne, a nightclub dancer who is caught between a dangerous family history and a chance for a new life.

Marianne is fleeing her father, a disbarred, corrupt judge who lives in a villa in Portugal with Marianne’s half-sister Hildegarde Judy Huxtable. On Marianne’s 21st birthday, she is expected to receive a substantial inheritance from Ruth, her mother, who had once been a lover of the judge.
