In the final moments of The Diary, the nightmare that Olga has been trying to outrun finally erupts. Vera, now a clearly disturbed child, attacks Mariana with scissors just as Olga feared she would. Mariana manages to escape, but the violence does not stop there—Victor, who has been watching his daughter’s increasingly erratic behaviour, confronts her, asks why she’s wielding the weapon, and is pushed down the stairs. He succumbs to his injuries, leaving the family shattered.

Olga and Carlos rush to Victor’s house, only to find the police and social services already there. Carlos tells Olga that Vera will be placed under observation, hoping that professional help might steer her away from the darkness that seems inevitable. But Olga, convinced that the only way to break the grim future she has glimpsed is to end it now, decides to take matters into her own hands. She lures Vera into the car and deliberately crashes, intending to kill them both and thus erase the murderous fate.

Miraculously, both mother and daughter survive the crash. In a chilling, lingering shot, Vera looks at her mother with a blank, vengeful stare and asks, “Did you really try to kill me?” The question hangs in the air, suggesting that the cycle of violence is far from over—if anything, it may have just begun. Vera’s implied next victim is her own mother, the very person who tried to save her, marking the moment where her sociopathic impulses could finally take root.

The film closes on this unresolved cliff‑hanger, leaving the audience to wonder whether Olga will ever find a way to intervene before Vera fully embraces the darkness that the mysterious diary and the haunted chest have foretold.
