The Hindi-language film, directed by P.C. Barua, adapts Saratchandra Chatterjee’s novel. Devdas, a zamindar’s son, and Parvati, his neighbor’s daughter, are childhood sweethearts, but caste and class keep them apart. Devdas is sent to Calcutta, while Paro marries an aged widower. In Calcutta, grief leads Devdas to alcohol, where he meets Chandramukhi, a courtesan who becomes his confidante.
