October 1918 sees Karl Liebknecht freed, prompting celebrations among Berlin’s workers. With World War I nearly ending, the German Kaiserreich sends its last reserves to futile battles. Inspired by the Kiel sailors’ mutiny, the working class rallies behind Liebknecht, who on 9 November proclaims the Free Socialist Republic of Germany, while pro‑Kaiser troops and right‑wing Social Democrats move to suppress the revolution.
