In Illyria, a headstrong princess rejects countless noble suitors until she notices a wandering gypsy near the castle, who is really the Prince of Denmark with his friend Kasper Røghat. He tempts her with magical toys—a rattle and a copper kettle—in exchange for a kiss and a night in her chambers. Kasper the dwarf informs the king, and the princess is banished by her father.
