In 1968, the Bockerer finally decides to marry his long‑time widowed housekeeper, Anna. His wartime protégé Gustl, opening a butcher shop in the Czech town of Kostelec, invites the couple to join his wedding celebration with his fiancée Elena, while friend Hatzinger comes along. Their honeymoon coincides with the hopeful but ill‑fated Prague Spring, forcing the Bockerer to confront that “communism with a human face” remains an idle wish.
