Death of a Cyclist (1955) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Death of a Cyclist (1955), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

The Death of a Cyclist opens with the uneasy return of Juan Fernández Soler, a university professor, and María José de Castro, a wealthy married woman, from an adulterous liaison. As they speed along a road, they strike a cyclist with their car. Although the cyclist was alive when they left him, the report of his death gnaws at them, turning their private lives into a source of constant anxiety.

For [María José de Castro], exposure would threaten the world she has built as a socialite. But the cyclist’s death drives Juan Fernández Soler to confront his own life choices, including his past as a Falange soldier, and to see the hypocrisy seeping through the upper crust he inhabits. The mounting tensions are intensified by the meddling Rafa, an art critic who has spent months observing the social circle around him. His stated goal to “purify” the upper class becomes a plan to expose the affair, revealing a calculated impulse to redefine who belongs in their world. The film quietly builds its commentary on class through these parallel reactions—the gradual unraveling of two people who share a secret and the outsider who seeks to expose it.

Juan and María José respond to the crisis in markedly different ways, and those divergent choices reveal the film’s skeptical stance on privilege, reputation, and power. The tension between confession and concealment drives the narrative forward, making the audience question the cost of maintaining appearances in a society that prizes status above all else.

In the final act, Juan resolves to surrender to the police with María José, seeking some form of accountability. Yet María José clings to the life she knows and attempts to protect her world at any cost. She runs Juan over, a drastic attempt to erase the threat and return to her former life. This act stands as a stark symbol of the upper class’s entrenchment and fear of losing control. The tale does not end with a simple reckoning, however: on their return to her husband, María José is herself driven off a bridge by a cyclist and falls to her death. The last image lingers on the cyclist riding away, leaving the viewer with an uneasy sense of unresolved motives and uncertain futures.
