Maxim and his fellow soldiers are involved in clandestine experiments aimed at creating a new kind of human being. Working within the secretive Institute, they are confronted by colleagues exhibiting traits Maxim finds deeply troubling: alcoholism, moral decay, and a lack of purpose. Vika, a waitress at the Institute’s cafeteria, develops feelings for the idealistic young communist, though she is disturbed by his interest in eugenics and his volatile nature.
