Maxim and his fellow soldiers are involved in clandestine experiments aimed at creating a new kind of human being. Working within the secretive Institute, they are confronted by colleagues exhibiting traits Maxim finds deeply troubling: alcoholism, moral decay, and a lack of purpose. Vika, a waitress at the Institute’s cafeteria, develops feelings for the idealistic young communist, though she is disturbed by his interest in eugenics and his volatile nature. As their relationship develops, state security agents closely monitor their connection, hoping to understand the forces at play.
