Emery Slade, a Hollywood star in 1932, sees his career slump by 1949. He convinces studio head Melville Crossman to cast him in a film version of a Broadway hit, on the condition he travels to New York and persuades the stage’s leading lady to join. Upon meeting the charming Julie Clarke, he hatches a different scheme.
