Cruz e Sousa, a Black poet born in Santa Catarina, Brazil—a region where most residents have blonde hair—lived in poverty and faced the pervasive racism of his era. He died at the age of 37, leaving his beloved, Gavíria, to endure profound grief and hardship. His brief life and the suffering endured by Gavíria illustrate the personal toll of the oppression he faced.
