In the scorching summer of 1998, Sedrick, a young African-American student, grapples with life challenges in inner-city Miami. He faces the burden of growing up without his mother, while his relationship with his father, a passionate chess player, is strained due to their conflicting priorities.

Sedrick decides to enroll in a chess class, initially believing it to be an easy choice. This decision unwittingly sets into motion a series of transformative events that significantly affect his future and the lives of his classmates.

The chess class is led by Mr. T, a friendly Cuban-American instructor played by John Leguizamo. Under his guidance, Sedrick meets a diverse group of classmates who also navigate their respective struggles.
