Barry Brandon, a criminal lawyer, visits the nightclub of his client Denny Larkin with society girl Betty Walker. After a police raid, he deliberately incriminates the whole group to spite Larkin. That night he defends Madge Carter, charged with disorderly conduct, uncovering a frame‑up; he hires her as his secretary and falls for her. Rising to district attorney with gubernatorial ambitions, he is drunkenly coaxed by Betty into marriage, which he later annuls. When Larkin kills a gangster, he threatens Brandon, forcing Madge to lie in court about self‑defense. Brandon, now prosecuting, knows she’s perjuring herself but cannot explain why.
