Coraline Jones and her family relocate to a vintage house split into different flats. Among the quirky residents are two retired actresses, Miss Spink and Miss Forcible, and the eccentric Mr. Bobo, affectionately dubbed the “Crazy Old Man Upstairs,” who insists he is training a mouse circus. An intriguing mystery surrounds the flat next to Coraline’s, as it remains sealed behind a large brown door.

One rainy afternoon, Coraline’s curiosity leads her to the locked door in the living room, which has been plastered over. When she visits her neighbors, Mr. Bobo delivers a cryptic warning from the mice: “Don’t go through the door.” Later, during tea with Miss Spink and Miss Forcible, Miss Spink foresees peril in Coraline’s future through her tea leaves and hands her a lucky adder stone, claiming it is “good for bad things.” Yet, Coraline’s curiosity gets the better of her, and she unlocks the door when she is alone, discovering that the brick wall has vanished. Instead, a winding passage leads to an identical apartment inhabited by her Other Mother and Other Father—doppelgängers of her real parents, complete with button eyes and exaggerated features.

In this enchanting yet perilous “Other World,” Coraline is mesmerized by the attention and care from her Other Parents, the animated toys in her toy box, and the ongoing cabaret performances from the Other Miss Spink and Miss Forcible. Only the mysterious Black Cat, who saunters between the realms, cautions Coraline about the lurking dangers, though she dismisses his warnings.

The Other Mother offers Coraline a tempting proposition: she can stay in this ideal world forever, but only if she allows buttons to be sewn into her eyes. Horrified, Coraline retreats back through the door, only to discover that her real parents have vanished. The next day, the Black Cat guides her to a mirror, where her trapped parents plead for help by inscribing “Help Us” on the glass. Realizing that the Other Mother has ensnared them, Coraline bravely returns to confront her and free her parents.

With the guidance of the Cat, Coraline engages the Other Mother in a game, knowing her adversary thrives on challenges. Although the Other Mother attempts to charm Coraline into staying, Coraline firmly rejects the offer and is imprisoned behind a mirror as punishment. Within the darkness, she encounters three ghostly children, each from different eras, who fell victim to the Other Mother’s deceit when they allowed buttons to replace their eyes. They implore her to avoid the same fate and enlist her help to reclaim their lost souls, so they can finally escape the Other World.

Once released, Coraline proposes a wager: find the ghost children’s souls and her parents, hidden within the Other World. If she succeeds, they will all gain freedom; if she fails, she will submit to having buttons sewn into her eyes. Swiftly overcoming various obstacles set by the Other Mother, Coraline uses her cleverness and Miss Spink’s lucky stone to track down the lost souls. As the game reaches its climax, the ghost children warn her that even if she wins, the Other Mother will never let them go.

Finally, deducing that her parents are trapped in a snow globe atop the mantle, Coraline devises a clever ruse. She tricks the Other Mother into thinking her parents are waiting behind another door. As the Other Mother opens it, Coraline hurls the cat at her, seizes the snow globe, and escapes back to reality with the key. In a moment of closure, she manages to close the door on the Other Mother’s hand, causing it to be severed.

Upon returning home, Coraline finds her parents safe and unaware of the harrowing events that transpired. Later that night, she dreams of the three ghost children, who alert her that her battle is far from over. The severed hand of the Other Mother looms in her world, intent on retrieving the key that links the two universes. Using her cunning, Coraline lures the hand to an old well in the woods, pretending to picnic with her dolls. In a final act of bravery, she casts the hand down the well, reclaiming her victory. Coraline returns home, ready to embrace the wonderfully ordinary life she has learned to cherish.
