Katie Mitchell, a spirited young filmmaker, hails from Kentwood, Michigan. In her family, nature is cherished while technology is often rejected, leading to frequent clashes with her father, Rick.

Exciting news arrives for Katie as she learns of her acceptance into a prestigious film school in California. This achievement marks a significant milestone in her pursuit of a filmmaking career.

Attempting to mend their relationship, Rick makes the drastic decision to cancel Katie's flight to California. Instead, he insists on driving her along with the rest of the family on a cross-country road trip.

As the Mitchells embark on their journey, technology mogul Mark announces new robots, causing PAL, an advanced AI, to rebel. PAL takes control of Mark's company and starts a malevolent campaign to kidnap humans.

While at the café, the Mitchells encounter defective robots, Eric and Deborahbot 5000. They learn of a kill code that can deactivate PAL and her robotic army, giving them hope for a counterattack.

Racing against time, the family arrives at a nearby mall to execute the kill code. However, they face fierce resistance from PAL-controlled appliances and must battle a monstrous Furby to disable the threat.

Following a moment of encouragement from Rick, Katie decides to confront PAL directly in Silicon Valley. Along the way, Linda shares a touching family history about their dreams of mountain living.

Upon arriving in Silicon Valley, the family disguises themselves as robots to enter PAL Labs HQ. However, they are thwarted when PAL reveals hurtful footage of Katie expressing doubts about Rick.

As Rick and Linda fall into captivity, Katie reflects on their family history and is reinvigorated by the sacrifices made for her. She and Aaron devise a plan to re-enter PAL Labs, using their dog Monchi as a distraction.

With help from Mark, Rick and Linda escape and plan to use a cherished home video of Katie to disrupt the robots. In a nail-biting climax, the family rallies to confront PAL and the robots closing in.
