Colt .45 (1950) Timeline Explained – Every Event in Order

Steve Farrell was arrested because the townspeople of Red Rock believed he had helped Jason Brett escape. Even though Brett simply seized the Colt .45 pistols during a prison transfer and overpowered the guards, the townspeople suspected foul play since Farrell was the gun dealer who had just demonstrated those very pistols. His profession made him an easy target for suspicion, and he was thrown in jail until he could prove his innocence.

Steve Farrell spotted a white scarf hanging outside the stagecoach window during the confrontation and believed it was a signal from Beth Donovan indicating she was conspiring with Jason Brett's gang. However, this was a misunderstanding. The scarf was not actually a signal, it was simply a misreading of the situation that caused Farrell to pursue Beth unnecessarily, delaying his hunt for Brett.

Foreshadowing: Earlier in the stagecoach scene, Beth had tried to stop Farrell from fighting the gang, which seemed suspicious but was actually her trying to prevent violence.

Beth Donovan tried to prevent the gunfight on the stagecoach because she was married to Paul Donovan, one of Jason Brett's henchmen. She was trapped in a difficult position, opposed to the criminal activity but married to a man working with the gang. When she tried to stop Farrell from confronting Brett's men, it appeared suspicious, but she was genuinely trying to avoid violence while being unable to reveal her true connection to the outlaws.

Jason Brett became extremely dangerous because the Colt .45 repeating pistols gave him a massive advantage over ordinary firearms. The Colt .45 was a superior weapon for its time, allowing for rapid fire and greater stopping power. This technological edge allowed Brett to launch a brutal spree of robberies and cold-blooded murders that regular guns couldn't match, making him nearly unstoppable until Steve Farrell obtained his own Colt .45s to even the odds.
