Chouga, a thirty‑year‑old, affluent and adored woman living in Astana, the new Kazakh capital, is married to a celebrated scientist in his sixties and has a seven‑year‑old son. When her marriage begins to fray, her brother in Almaty asks her to intervene. While there she meets Ablaï, a wealthy, idle young man whose magnetism sparks a forbidden attraction. Returning to Astana, Chouga struggles to suppress the desire, haunted by a foreboding sense of tragedy.
