Set in Paris in 1784, the film follows Joseph Balsamo, known as Count Cagliostro, a notorious adventurer, magician, necromancer, physician and swordsman. He rises among the decadent French aristocracy, but a bold prophecy about a prominent noblewoman brings his downfall. Only fragments survive, as much of the film is lost.
