Based on true events in Taiwan, the film recounts the March 12 1867 wreck of the American ship Rover on the southern tip of the Hengchun Peninsula. Eighteen‑year‑old Tiap‑moe, fluent in several languages, assists U.S. consul Charles Le Gendre in the investigation. She is drawn into a tangled ethnic conflict, confronting prejudice linked to her ancestry, gender and bloodline while trying to mediate between Westerners, the Seqalus, Hokkiens and Hakkas.
