A film adaptation of Guy de Maupassant’s short story set during the 1870 Franco‑Prussian War. A group of French bourgeois travel by stagecoach from occupied Rouen, accompanied by an attractive demimonde woman derisively called “Boule‑de‑Suif.” When the carriage is stopped, the authorities insist she submit to the gendarmerie chief’s advances, presenting her as the only means to secure their passage.
