Set in 1857 Paris, the trial of French writer Gustave Flaubert becomes a vehicle for recounting the true story behind his novel Madame Bovary. He describes Emma Bovary as a sensitive yet capricious woman whose desperate attempts to escape provincial bourgeois life lead to affairs, debt, family ruin, disgrace and ultimately tragedy.
