In the ending of Boneyard, the investigation into the West Mesa murders remains unresolved, reflecting the real-life case’s lingering mystery. This revelation shifts Ortega’s suspicion away from Tate and onto Graham, leading to his arrest based on his own crimes, rather than the murders. Meanwhile, Agent Petrovick continues to hunt for the real killer, Caesar Monto, but despite suspecting him, DNA evidence ultimately clears Caesar of the murders. The final scenes show that the bones discovered in the desert are just part of the ongoing found remains, with no definitive killer caught. The case stays open and unresolved, echoing the true story’s ambiguity, as no conclusive evidence has ever linked any suspect to the horrific crimes. The film ends with the sense that justice has not been fully served, and the true murderer remains at large, leaving the case shrouded in mystery and despair.
