Dagwood Bumstead, an architect, secures a contract to build a new bank in town, convincing bank president Samuel Breckenridge of his firm's capabilities. His boss, George Radcliffe, is delighted and offers Dagwood a modest raise of $2.50. This marks a significant professional achievement for Dagwood.

Dagwood calls his wife, Blondie, to share the good news about the contract. She mistakenly believes he has received a $250 raise instead of $2.50. Blondie soon shares this exciting news with friends, spreading the false impression of Dagwood's newfound wealth.

As the class reunion approaches, Blondie is part of the planning committee. When friends like Cynthia Thompson and Paul Madison hear about Dagwood's supposed fortune, they suggest he pay the $400 dinner bill, which puts Blondie in a difficult position. Blondie agrees to defend Dagwood's honor by accepting this burden.

Realizing he cannot afford the $400 dinner, Dagwood panics and begins searching for ways to raise the money. Faced with limited options, he considers gambling at the horse track, seeking help from a gambling expert, Pete Brody, in hopes of winning enough for the dinner.

The bank president, Samuel Breckenridge, learns about Dagwood's gambling interests and cancels the bank contract immediately. Radcliffe, furious about the failed project and Dagwood's behavior, fires him from the firm on the spot, deepening Dagwood's predicament.

Blondie contributes $200 by making women's hats to help raise money for the reunion dinner. Despite her efforts, Dagwood is still short of $200, forcing him to consider riskier options to cover the remaining cost.

Dagwood visits an illegal gambling parlor to bet the remaining $200. He receives gambling advice from an old lady, but ends up betting on the wrong horse. However, the horse wins, giving him a stroke of luck before the place is raided by police.

The gambling raid leads to Dagwood's arrest as police shut down the illegal parlor. He manages to help the old lady escape undetected, but is taken into custody himself, leaving him detained before the reunion dinner.

Dagwood calls for Radcliffe to bail him out, but Samuel Breckenridge arrives first, offering to secure his release. Interestingly, Mrs. Breckenridge, the old lady from the gambling parlor, is present and turns out to be Breckenridge's wife, thus resolving the situation.

Grateful for Dagwood's help in avoiding a scandal, Breckenridge agrees to renew the bank construction contract. He also insists that Radcliffe pay for the reunion dinner, which Dagwood had promised, and demands Dagwood be rehired at the firm as part of the deal.

Dagwood is released from custody just in time to attend the reunion dinner. He manages to pay for the festivities, restoring his family's reputation and ending the hectic sequence of events on a positive note.
