In 1984 Salford, Georgie Gallagher lives with his widowed mother Erica. His passion for football clashes with Erica's wish for him to attend the prestigious Lancashire Grammar School for Boys, which requires passing the entrance exam.

During an open day at the school, Georgie spots a leaflet for the regional Manchester Junior Football Cup. He resolves to enter the tournament and beat the school bullies, hoping the prize money will cover the entry fee.

Georgie snatches a wallet from a stranger to obtain the £20 needed for Cup entry. The stranger turns out to be the elderly Sir Matt Busby, setting the stage for an unlikely chain of events.

With help from his friend Bob, Busby tracks down Georgie and discovers his football talent. They strike an agreement: Busby will coach Georgie's team in exchange for Georgie's silence about the theft.

Georgie returns to the pitch and delivers a decisive moment by scoring a direct free kick in the closing seconds to win the cup for his team. The crowd erupts as the underdogs seal a dramatic comeback.
