What Happens in Behind You: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Behind You (2020) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

The narrative unfolds in 1979, starting with Beth and her boyfriend, Charles, sharing a quiet moment in her room while her younger sister wanders the house. The tranquility is abruptly shattered when Beth hears her sister scream. Rushing with Charles to find her, they discover her transfixed by a mirror, pointing at something unseen. Suddenly, a pair of hands reaches out and grabs her.

Fast forward forty years into the future, two young girls, Olivia and her sister, Claire, are taken to stay with their aunt Beth after the passing of their mother, with their father decidedly absent. Olivia, the elder, arrives with her sister who carries a stuffed bunny, her sole means of communication due to her deep trauma. Aunt Beth appears reluctant to welcome them into her home, imposing strict boundaries that forbid them from entering her study or the ominous basement, a directive their stuffed bunny obediently seems to accept.

During dinner, prepared by Charles, it becomes clear that he is far more amiable than Aunt Beth, who continues to wear a frown. The strange stew that Charles cooked is met with mixed reactions—Olivia finds it edible, while Claire has a close call after discovering it contains peanut butter, necessitating a swift EpiPen intervention from Olivia to save her sister's life.

As the night deepens, Claire is drawn to eerie whispers compelling her to breach the very rules Aunt Beth established. Venturing into the study, she uncovers Beth with a wine glass in hand. In a drawer, Claire stumbles upon a key that leads her to the basement where dusty mirrors reside. Here, she senses a familiar presence, believing she can communicate with her mother through the glass. Encouraged to chant specific words to unlock the mirrors, Claire unwittingly invites something sinister into their world.

The next morning, Claire shows Olivia an old newspaper clipping revealing Aunt Beth's dark past—her conviction for the murder of her own parents and sister. Realizing their lives are in jeopardy, Olivia hastily contacts Camilla, their caretaker, who agrees to come over urgently. Their escape plan, however, is thwarted when Claire begins to exhibit increasingly peculiar behavior, expressing a desire to remain in their aunt's house and devouring dinner ravenously. The uneasy exchange between Beth and Charles indicates something is amiss as Beth suspects the girls have entered her study.

While locked away, Olivia witnesses Camilla arrive only to be abruptly dismissed by Charles. Soon, Camilla returns with a firearm she discovered in Charles's car, ready to confront Beth and Charles, but the situation spirals further into chaos.

As they try to escape, Claire is grief-stricken over abandoning her bunny, prompting Olivia to search for it, only to find blood staining the car windows—Camilla has been gruesomely slaughtered, and little Claire has gone missing. When she confronts Beth and Charles, the horrific truth surfaces: the house is a prison for a malevolent entity desperately seeking entry into the living realm. Beth explicates her remorse over having to kill her sister to safeguard the world from this evil.

Determined to stop the entity without resorting to murder, they devise a plan involving breaking mirrors to reveal and combat the spirit lurking within. However, this attempt quickly escalates into tragedy as Olivia discovers Claire laid out on a plastic sheet, with Beth and Charles preparing to commit an unspeakable act.

In a desperate plea, Olivia argues that Beth never truly sought alternative methods to defeat the entity and merely seeks bloodshed. Charles, moved by her words, reluctantly decides to aid Olivia. Their risky scheme involves feeding Claire peanut butter to induce choking, hoping to expel the spirit and then revive her with an EpiPen. The attempts are grueling as it takes multiple EpiPens to restore Claire.

Ready to flee the next day, the girls are shocked to find the exits barred. Beth rushes in, warning them of the entity caught between realms, which harms Charles by driving a shard of glass into his throat. Claire, believing this is her fault, uses the incantation to draw the evil within herself. In a heart-wrenching act of sacrifice, Beth recites the words first and hands Olivia a shard of mirror; the entity swiftly manifests in a swirl of dark smoke, possessing Beth. Without hesitation, Olivia stabs her aunt.

The arrival of law enforcement and emergency services brings mixed emotions, but Olivia is relieved to be reunited with Claire. A police officer informs them that the shocking incident will be classified as a murder-suicide. As the last candle flickers and extinguishes within the isolated house, a haunting sense of finality permeates the air.

Behind You Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Behind You (2020): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why is Aunt Beth reluctant to have Olivia and Claire stay with her?

Beth is reluctant because she knows the house contains a dangerous demon trapped in mirrors. She killed her own sister forty years ago to prevent the entity from entering the real world, and she fears history will repeat itself with the girls. Her strict rules about the study and basement are meant to keep them away from the mirrors where the demon can reach them.

Q2

What happened to Beth's sister in 1979?

In 1979, Beth's younger sister was grabbed by hands emerging from a mirror when she was transfixed by an unseen force. Beth witnessed this horror but was unable to save her. The demon had been trying to cross into the living world, and Beth was forced to kill her own sister to prevent the entity from using her as a gateway.

Q3

Why are the mirrors in the basement important?

The mirrors are the only way the demon can enter the living world. All mirrors in the house were covered to prevent the entity from reaching through, but the basement contains dusty mirrors that were left exposed. When Claire uncovers one and chants the incantation, she inadvertently opens a gateway for the demon to enter their world.

Q4

Why does Claire start acting strangely after entering the basement?

Claire becomes possessed by the demon after chanting the words to unlock the mirrors in the basement. The entity begins influencing her behavior, making her want to stay in the house, eat ravenously, and eventually attempt to bring the demon fully into the world. Her strange actions are not her own, she is being controlled by the malevolent force.

Q5

How does the peanut butter and EpiPen plan save Claire?

Olivia and Beth devise a desperate plan to force the demon out of Claire by making her choke on peanut butter (knowing she has a severe allergy). The theory is that choking will expel the entity, and they can then revive her with an EpiPen. The plan works after multiple EpiPen injections, temporarily freeing Claire from possession.

  • epipen
  • allergy

Q6

Why does Beth sacrifice herself at the end?

Beth realizes the demon is trapped between realms and will keep harming people unless it fully manifests and is destroyed. She deliberately recites the incantation to draw the entity into herself, becoming possessed so Olivia can stab her with a mirror shard. This kills both Beth and the demon, ending the threat permanently. Beth spends her life atoning for killing her sister and finally finds redemption by sacrificing herself instead of killing another family member.

Q7

Why can't Olivia and Claire leave the house?

The demon has trapped them inside. Once the entity is caught between realms after Claire partially absorbs it, the house becomes a prison. The exits are mysteriously barred, and the demon continues hunting them because it needs a full physical form to escape into the world.

Q8

What happens to Charles at the end?

Charles is killed when the demon drives a shard of glass into his throat while he attempts to help Olivia and Beth fight the entity. He was Beth's longtime partner who helped her contain the demon for decades, and his death occurs when the entity attacks him as they try to break the mirrors.

Q9

What is the incantation used to control the mirrors?

The incantation is a phrase Claire is whispered that allows someone to communicate through mirrors and unlock the gateway between worlds. When spoken, it allows the demon to reach through mirrors. Beth uses the same incantation in reverse to draw the demon into herself, sacrificing her body as a vessel so the entity can be destroyed.

  • incantation

  • mirror
  • demon

Q10

Why does Claire communicate through a stuffed bunny?

Claire is deeply traumatized, likely from losing their mother, and has stopped speaking as a result. The stuffed bunny becomes her only source of comfort and means of communication. The bunny 'obediently' seems to accept Beth's house rules, which is actually the demon manipulating Claire through the toy to gain trust and access.

Q11

What happens to Camilla, the caretaker?

Camilla arrives at the house after Olivia calls her for help. She brings a gun she found in Charles's car to confront Beth and Charles, but before she can intervene, she is brutally murdered. Olivia later discovers her body and blood covering the car windows, with Claire mysteriously missing from the scene.
