Merliah Summers Kelly Sheridan is a young, up-and-coming surfing star in Malibu. During a competition, her focus wavers when her hair suddenly sprouts pink streaks, sending her into a wipeout. While she’s underwater, she discovers she can breathe, and a talking, pink bottlenose dolphin named Zuma greets her. Shocked, Merliah Summers Kelly Sheridan explains the strange encounter to her grandfather, Break Garry Chalk. Break reveals a family secret: Merliah’s mother is a mermaid, and Merliah was given to Break as a baby because she was born with legs. The revelation leaves Merliah overwhelmed and doubtful about her path.

After she confides in her friends, Fallon Nakia Burrise and Hadley Maryke Hendrikse about the tale, Zuma reappears and confirms that Merliah is indeed half-mermaid. Zuma explains that Merliah’s mother is Calissa Nicole Oliver, the former queen of the underwater realm of Oceana. The current ruler, Eris Kathleen Barr, Calissa’s sister, seized the throne years earlier when Calissa vanished. Zuma hopes Merliah will embrace her birthright and challenge Eris. Merliah recoils from the idea; in anger she abandons the necklace she has worn since infancy. When the pendant shatters, a magical image of Calissa appears, proving she is alive. With newfound resolve, Merliah agrees to travel to Oceana to seek Calissa’s aid in reclaiming her life.

On the voyage to Oceana, Zuma explains that the ocean’s vitality is waning because Eris lacks the skill to spin Merillia—the magical substance that sustains the seas. The trio slips into Oceana during a festival orchestrated by Eris, during which she distributes Merillia to win the citizens’ adoration. In truth, Calissa is the one spinning Merillia and is imprisoned in the palace dungeon.

With the help of mermaids Kayla and Xylie, Merliah’s legs are masked by a pretend tail. They seek the Destinies, three mermaids with prophetic powers, who reveal that Merliah must collect three items to overthrow Eris: the Celestial Comb, a Dreamfish, and Eris’s protective necklace. The group pursues the items, occasionally turning to Fallon Nakia Burrise and Hadley Maryke Hendrikse for research when needed. The Celestial Comb is located in an underwater cave, and the Dreamfish lies within the Adenato currents.

To seize Eris’s necklace, Merliah, Kayla, and Xylie confront Eris during the next festival and perform a song and dance to distract her. Merliah manages to grab the necklace, but Eris retaliates by yanking off Merliah’s tail, exposing her legs. Enraged, Eris conjures a whirlpool to banish Merliah to the ocean’s deepest trench. Trapped, Merliah calls on the Dreamfish for help. The Dreamfish offers to grant Merliah’s deepest wish and return her to Malibu, erasing her mermaid half. Merliah declines the offer and embraces her responsibilities as Oceana’s princess, earning a real mermaid tail that helps her escape the whirlpool.

Back above the waves, Merliah reveals her true identity to the Ocean people, brandishing the Celestial Comb as proof. Eris pursues, but Merliah outsmarts her and drags the tyrant into the whirlpool, trapping her. Merliah then locates Calissa and frees her, allowing Calissa to reclaim the throne. With Calissa back in power, she regains the ability to spin Merillia at full strength, restoring Oceana to its former vitality. Merliah confesses that she misses life on land, and Calissa presents her with a magical necklace that lets her transform between human and mermaid at will. The tale concludes with Merliah returning to shore, reuniting with Break Garry Chalk, and entering the surfing competition with renewed confidence.

Q1

Why does Merliah get pink streaks in her hair during the surfing competition?

A.

The pink streaks appear as the first visible manifestation of Merliah's mermaid heritage. When she's underwater during the wipeout, she discovers she can breathe and meets Zuma, confirming she is half-mermaid. The pink streaks are a magical sign of her connection to the ocean.

Earlier, Merliah's grandfather Break hints at her unique lineage when he reveals she was born with legs despite being half-mermaid.

Q2

What is Merillia and why is it important to Oceana?

A.

Merillia is the magical substance that sustains the entire ocean and all its inhabitants. It is spun by the queen of Oceana, and without it, the ocean's vitality rapidly declines. Eris lacks the skill to spin Merillia properly, which is why the ocean is weakening throughout the film.

Zuma explains during the voyage to Oceana that the ocean's vitality is waning because Eris lacks the ability to spin Merillia.

Q3

Why did Eris seize the throne of Oceana?

A.

Eris is Calissa's younger sister. When Calissa vanished years before the story begins, Eris took the opportunity to seize power and claim the throne for herself. However, Calissa was actually imprisoned in the palace dungeon the entire time, secretly spinning Merillia to keep the ocean alive.

Zuma reveals that Eris seized the throne when Calissa vanished, but the film doesn't initially reveal that Calissa was imprisoned.

Q4

What three items does Merliah need to collect to defeat Eris?

A.

The Destinies reveal that Merliah must collect three specific items: the Celestial Comb (located in an underwater cave), the Dreamfish (hidden in the Adenato currents), and Eris's protective necklace (which Merliah must steal during a festival). These three items together give her the power to overthrow the usurper.

The three mermaids with prophetic powers, known as the Destinies, directly instruct Merliah on what she must obtain.

Q5

What happens when Merliah gets trapped in the whirlpool?

A.

After Eris yanks off Merliah's tail and exposes her legs, she conjures a whirlpool that banishes Merliah to the ocean's deepest trench. While trapped, Merliah calls on the Dreamfish, who offers to grant her deepest wish: return to Malibu and erase her mermaid half entirely. This is the film's major turning point.

The Dreamfish earlier promised to grant Merliah's deepest wish, setting up this crucial decision moment.

Q6

Why does Merliah decline the Dreamfish's offer to return to Malibu?

A.

Merliah chooses to embrace her responsibilities as Oceana's princess rather than take the easy way out. She decides to accept her dual identity and fight for her kingdom rather than abandon it. This choice earns her a real mermaid tail that helps her escape the trench and continue her quest.

The Dreamfish specifically offers to erase her mermaid half, directly testing her commitment to her heritage.

Q7

How was Calissa imprisoned in the palace dungeon the whole time?

A.

When Calissa vanished years earlier, Eris actually captured her and imprisoned her in the palace dungeon. Despite being locked away, Calissa continued to spin Merillia from her cell, which is how the ocean survived despite Eris's incompetence. Eris took credit for producing Merillia during festivals to win the citizens' love.

During the festival, Zuma notes that Eris distributes Merillia to win adoration, but the source of this magic is never questioned until the reveal.

Q8

What does the magical necklace at the end allow Merliah to do?

A.

Calissa gifts Merliah a magical necklace that grants her the ability to transform between human and mermaid forms at will. This resolves the central conflict of the story by allowing Merliah to keep both her life on land (including competitive surfing) and her duties as Oceana's princess.

Throughout the film, Merliah struggles with choosing between her land life and her oceanic heritage, making this gift the perfect solution.

Q9

Why was Merliah born with legs if she's a mermaid?

A.

Merliah is half-mermaid and half-human, which is why she was born with legs rather than a tail. Her mother Calissa is the mermaid queen of Oceana, and her father is human. This hybrid nature is what allows her to live on land and eventually switch between forms.

Break reveals that Merliah was given to him as a baby because she was born with legs, establishing her unique half-human heritage.

Q10

How does Merliah defeat Eris and reclaim the throne?

A.

Merliah surfaces and reveals her true identity to the Ocean people, using the Celestial Comb as proof of her royal lineage. When Eris pursues her, Merliah outsmarts the villain and drags her into the whirlpool itself, trapping Eris forever. She then locates the imprisoned Calissa and frees her to reclaim the throne.

Merliah's earlier defeat in the whirlpool is reversed when she returns with her real mermaid tail and uses the same trap against Eris.
