Band Waggon

Arthur Askey and Stinker Murdoch are living on the roof of Broadcasting House in Central London while waiting for their big BBC break. Their precarious setup is shattered when an item from their clothes line falls and hits Claude Pilkington, a senior BBC figure. The incident leads to their eviction, forcing them to pack up their belongings and leave.

While driving home, Pilkington's car suffers a punctured tire from broken glass lying on the road. The glass has been placed there by the owners of the Jack-in-the-Box restaurant in hopes of pressuring the BBC for an audition. He unwittingly sits through their cabaret act, barely noticing it while reading the newspaper, and then storms off in anger when he learns who caused the puncture.

Desperate for a place to live, Askey and Murdoch visit a countryside estate agent. They are offered a castle for just £3 rent, though the owner wants to unload it because it is haunted. They accept the bargain and move in, unwittingly stepping into a place with a dark reputation.

Once installed, they experience a string of sinister happenings that the estate agent insists have perfectly natural explanations. Unexplained noises and eerie sensations heighten the castle's menace as the oddities mount. The duo grows increasingly unsettled but presses on, curious about the truth behind the hauntings.

They encounter Jasper Blackfang, a ghost who claims to haunt the place. The frightful encounter drives them to flee and seek shelter at the nearby Jack-in-the-Box restaurant. This strange meeting sows the seed of a larger mystery about the castle's past.

Emboldened by the realization that the 'ghost' is, in fact, the castle's caretaker living there rent-free, they decide to confront the place. They return to the castle with Jack Hylton and Patricia Kirkwood to test the theory against the haunting. The trio begins to reconnect the castle's oddities with its hidden life.

They discover a television studio inside the castle, which the caretaker claims is used by a pirate commercial station. In truth, Nazi agents are running the operation, though the caretaker remains unaware of the espionage. The discovery drags the group deeper into a dangerous conspiracy.

Deciding to broadcast their own show, Askey performs on a wavelength that clashes with Pilkington's BBC schedule. The pirate broadcast interrupts Pilkington's program, which infuriates him, but it also generates huge public interest. The BBC's false start with piracy unexpectedly becomes a smash hit with audiences.

Pilkington enlists Scotland Yard to shut down the pirate station. The castle's hidden package includes plans of British planes stolen by Nazi agents, and Askey unwittingly holds up the plans during his broadcast. The stakes escalate as authorities close in on the operation.

An hour-long performance is staged as the climax, drawing police, BBC officials, and Nazi agents to the castle. The tension peaks with a ticking time bomb, threatening everyone involved. The chaotic convergence tests the ingenuity and nerve of the broadcasters.

The pirate programme proves a roaring success and captures the public imagination. Impressed by the stunt and the audience response, the BBC agrees to give Askey, Murdoch, and their associates their own show. The pair finally secures their big break after the dramatic events at the castle.
