In 1838 Naples, gamekeeper Malacarne kills bandit Caruso; Caruso’s widow raises his son Giovanni while also nursing Costanza, the baron’s orphaned daughter. Thirteen years later the two fall in love, but Costanza’s uncle locks her in a convent and orders Malacarne—now a bandit—to kill Giovanni. Giovanni survives, later kills Malacarne, assumes his role, and rescues Costanza when her carriage is ambushed. She rejects his proposal, marries Lo Turco, but flees with Giovanni and they escape to America.
