A Macedonian family from Bitola faces the harsh realities of life at the turn of the twentieth century, struggling to survive, preserve their roots, and stay together as the world around them shifts. After their father’s death, three children are left to cope: the elder, quiet Eleni [nataa-tapukovi], and the younger twins, Andja [dragana-kostadinovska] and Duko [nikola-aceski], who carry the weight of loss and uncertainty in very different ways.

Eleni’s heart is bound to a forbidden love, a young Turkish cadet named Kemal [ertan-saban], and his presence shadows her days as she decides to devote her life to waiting. In contrast, Andja searches for her fiancé, Damjan [blagoj-veselinov], who stands as her brother’s closest ally and as a leader of insurgents against the Turks. But fate twists cruelly when Andja falls into the hands of Osman [salaetin-bilal], a renegade from the Sultan’s authority who becomes both captor and captor of her trust. Osman’s obsession with Andja drives him to murder Damjan after she trades for his freedom with what she still possesses—her own virginity. Damaged and unable to reclaim what she has given, Andja spends her days within a harem, still cherished yet spiritually withered, a blossom that has lost its fragrance.

The thread of vengeance winds through Duko as he becomes consumed by the desire to avenge his family, while Osman shifts from a calculated conqueror to a man driven by a dangerous, consuming love. To win Andja, Osman will marshal his forces and depend on his most loyal operative, Rasim [jordan-simonov], a man willing to lay down his life for him. Meanwhile, Eleni resolves to locate Andja, leaving behind a life of passivity to become a fighter for women’s rights, championing freedom, a more modern society, and the abolition of harems. She pours her convictions into letters she relentlessly sends to Kemal, ideas that he dedicates his own life to pursuing, even as the distance between them grows.

The oldest sister remains solitary. She sees Kemal only one more time before her voice is silenced by fate, a stark reminder of the costs exacted by a time of upheaval and shifting loyalties.

Side plot threads weave through the main tragedy. Edisse [dijana-viduin], a high-class French courtesan, travels from Paris toward the Sultan who has bought her, and aboard the Orient Express she meets Ikonomo [rade-erbedija], a Macedonian merchant who finances Osman and who quickly falls for her. Though he offers love in return, the perilous era compels him to entrust her to Osman, who in turn must deliver her to the Sultan. In a rare convergence of fates, Edisse encounters Andja and Eleni, the only moment these three women share the same place. When Edisse finally reaches the Sultan, she finds him already dead. She returns to Paris as a witness to three intertwined Balkan loves undone by a relentless march of history, a time that will come to be remembered for its struggle toward equality.

Throughout, the film threads together themes of duty, desire, and the price of change, painting a nuanced portrait of families, lovers, and rebels navigating a century of upheaval.
