Bad Night

Kate Lauren Luthringshausen and Abby Jenn McAllister are on a school field trip for their art history class, hoping for extra credit. The morning starts with bad news from Kate’s parents: a second college bill looms because her father’s latest investment failed, dimming Kate’s hopes for tuition relief and adding a weight to their day. After a visit to a local art museum, the class stops for lunch at a restaurant. The food turns out to be unappealing to Kate and Abby, even though their classmates eat it, and the two girls decide to munch on granola bars Abby brought rather than what’s served. When the bus resumes its tour, everyone else falls ill from the meal, while Kate and Abby remain relatively unharmed. The teacher, who also ate the lunch, steers the group to a motel to rest, and as they check in, Abby notices an envelope on the counter bearing the names Viceroy Julianna Guill and Monarch Judy Marte.

Meanwhile, Ari Matt Walsh, a roller rink owner and the boss of a small crew, hatches a plan with a driver named Wheels Owen Smith. They intend to move a painting for a price, hiring two art thieves who operate under the code names Viceroy and Monarch. Wheels agrees to the job but insists he will cut ties with Ari after this final commission. He’s told the motel where the pick‑up will happen, which happens to be the same motel where Kate and Abby are staying.

That night, Kate and Abby slip away from the motel to entertain themselves. To avoid being recognized, Kate and Abby pretend they are Viceroy and Monarch when they hail a ride, while the real Viceroy and Monarch prepare to leave the motel for their own job. Wheels escorts the girls in, mistaking them for the thieves, while the real Viceroy and Monarch are dropped off at the painting’s location by Brian, the actual driver who is waiting outside to pick them up.

The misadventure continues as Kate and Abby head to a thrift store with Wheels, unaware that two of Ari’s henchmen are tailing them, convinced they’re the notorious art thieves. Viceroy and Monarch successfully seize the painting and remain focused on the operation, while Brian is surprised to discover the deception and finds himself under threat once the split‑second misidentification becomes clear. Viceroy and Monarch eventually pin Brian down, demanding to know who he really is; he reveals only that he’s a driver for a ride‑share service, leaving them to realize they’ve accidentally boarded the wrong car.

Back at the motel, Kate and Abby’s night of mischief continues, including getting tattoos, as Wheels fights to make their escape possible. Ari’s henchmen close in, and the chase culminates when Kate and Abby are captured and brought to Ari, who believes they are the thieves. Abby pleads their innocence, but Kate pretends they are Viceroy and Monarch so they can barter for the painting. Ari withholds Abby’s safety and forces Kate to retrieve the artwork, threatening Abby if she fails. With time running out, Kate decides to seek help, returning to the motel where the real Viceroy and Monarch have been watching the security footage to trace the ride meant for them.

In a tense turn, Viceroy and Monarch step in, working with Kate to stage a ruse: Kate poses as Monarch and Abby as Viceroy to deliver the painting to Ari. When Wheels arrives to challenge the ruse, Ari’s buyer and henchmen are already preparing to authenticate the artwork. The buyer’s arrival triggers a showdown: a violent shootout erupts, shots echoing through the motel. The group fights off Ari’s henchmen and the buyer, and Wheels, who has been trying to explain the situation, is confronted with the reality of the night’s chaos. Brian’s outside plan comes apart as he is knocked out of the story’s central action, and the buyer is neutralized when a car strike maims the fleeing target.

In the aftermath, Viceroy and Monarch—who have been tracking the events—reveal themselves as undercover FBI agents dedicated to recovering stolen art. The group destroys Brian’s car to sever any remaining links to their night, and Wheels helps Kate and Abby understand that the night’s events must stay confidential. As a gesture of support for Kate’s education, Wheels gives Kate a substantial cash sum to help fund her college tuition. The two sisters—along with their new allies—return to their class, and the art history field trip resumes, now with a story that will stay with them long after the day ends.
