A romantic but awkward schoolgirl named Marta lives with her sister Kasia and grandmother, who shares tales of rebellion instead of traditional fairy tales. Their parents, Tadek and Elżbieta, reside in a hidden room, navigating a strained marriage. Tadek, a frustrated intellectual, makes moonshine and feels overshadowed by his successful brother-in-law, while Elżbieta is a “Solidarity” union leader yearning for freedom and a way out of Poland. The family's life changes when they acquire a coveted orange Fiat 126p, leading to trading ventures, travels abroad, and Marta's first love.
