Appa Rao is the protagonist, a habitual debtor who evades creditors through clever schemes and improvisations. His journey involves pursuing Subba Lakshmi after a lottery ticket encounter, leading to increasingly bold plans that test his ethics.

Subba Lakshmi is a constable portrayed by Shobana. She is initially portrayed as someone who keeps Appa Rao in check with her sharp mind and a memorable slap. She gradually becomes entangled in Appa Rao's schemes while using her intelligence to help arrange marriages. She is revealed to be Ammaji's eldest daughter, blending justice with personal affection.

Ammaji is the matriarch of the family, portrayed by Rama Prabha. She is a strong-willed woman who uses cunning and strategic thinking to protect her family. She orchestrates the complex marriage plot, leveraging social expectations and health stories to secure better outcomes for her daughters. Her methods are ethically gray but driven by love for her family.

Sastry, the fortune teller, is a pivotal character whose prophecy frames much of the narrative. He predicts that a woman will slap Appa Rao three times and eventually become his wife. This prophecy guides Appa Rao's decisions throughout the movie, with characters interpreting and bending the prediction to suit their goals. His brother Ironleg Sastri later disrupts the prophecy, adding complications.
