Apples (2022) Plot Summary & Ending Explained

In the end, it’s revealed that Joy did not actually die but chose to leave her family because she felt unappreciated and overwhelmed by their neglect and her husband's secretive behavior. She left after discovering that Stan knew about Harry Haddard cheating and felt betrayed by his indifference towards her concerns. To escape the constant dysfunction, she went to Savannah’s mountain house, where her history with her supposed tormentor—Savannah, whose real name is Lindsey—unfolded. Savannah, actually Harry's sister, had been extorting money from Harry and had a violent past, but she was also the one who drove Joy away after their emotional week together. When Joy called her family to warn them that she was safe, Savannah's plan to keep her isolated escalated into a car crash, which Joy survived. This act of fleeing was Joy’s way of reclaiming her life from a family that had long taken her for granted. Throughout the story, it’s clear that her disappearance was a desperate act of self-preservation rather than an ending filled with tragedy. In the final moments, the family realizes their mistakes, and Stan is cleared of accusations after police find Joy alive. The series concludes with the Delaneys confronting their fractures, forgiving each other, and finally understanding the importance of valuing their kin, inspired by Joy’s courageous decision to step away and prioritize her well-being. It’s a story about the complexities of family, the pain of neglect, and the hope for renewal.}
