Con man Eddie Dash reluctantly agrees to supervise the recently released mental patient, George, as part of his community service. They exit the sanitarium and begin adjusting to life outside. Eddie's scheming instincts clash with George's stubborn optimism as they head into the outside world.

George clings to Eddie, who tries to ditch him at the museum. George panics and bolts outside, accidentally knocking over Al Sandro, who mistakes him for Abe Fielding. The incident seeds the elaborate identity ruse that follows.
