Mary, a high school senior aspiring to dance, is treated as a maid by her guardian Dominique Blatt. Dominique and her daughters Britt and Bree use Mary for their own gain and keep her under constant control. Mary’s deceased mother was one of Dominique’s former dancers, which complicates their relationship but fuels Mary's determination to break free.

At school, Mary and her best friend Tami are bullied by Britt, Bree, and Natalia Faroush. The harassment reinforces Mary’s sense of isolation and the obstacles she must overcome. The school environment also foreshadows the moment when Mary’s dancing talent will finally be noticed.

Joey Parker, a famous pop star, returns to school for his senior year with his best friend Dustin The Funk. He announces a dance contest whose winner will become his partner in the next music video. Natalia, Joey's ex-girlfriend, is determined to rekindle their relationship, complicating the competition.

Joey holds a dance class attended by Britt, Bree, and Natalia. Mary secretly watches from behind a one-way mirror and is the only student able to match Joey's moves. Her phone rings, forcing her to flee before anyone notices her.
