Shivani Chopra Madhuri Dixit is an air hostess for Air India who shares a modest life with her sister Padmisha Sudha Chandran and her brother-in-law Mohanlal Tinnu Anand, a heavy gambler who bets away every penny he can find on horse races. One day, she encounters Vijay Agnihotri Shah Rukh Khan, a wealthy industrialist who is instantly smitten, but she remains cool and uninterested. Vijay makes a first play to win her over by asking Shivani to model for his family’s business, yet she refuses to cross that line. Undeterred, he keeps pursuing her, insisting that their connection could be something more than a casual acquaintance. He even reports to his mother, Padma Beena Banerjee that he intends to marry Shivani, a notion that shocks the family and sets up a dramatic confrontation about fate, duty, and desire.

When the families discuss Shivani’s hand in marriage, they discover that she plans to wed Ashok Chopra Deepak Tijori, an Air India pilot. This news leaves Vijay heartbroken and shocked, while Shivani and Ashok proceed with their plans and eventually move to America after the ceremony. Four years pass, and though Vijay cannot forget Shivani, he rejects all other matrimony proposals brought by his mother. Shivani and Ashok have a daughter, Pinky, and Shivani chooses a quieter life off the flightline, volunteering at a hospital for the mentally and physically disabled. Vijay, meanwhile, schemes to get closer to Shivani by befriending Ashok and nurturing a grand plan to launch his own airline, hiring Ashok as a high‑paid general manager, largely unaware that Vijay’s true goal is to draw Shivani back into his orbit.

A troubling turn comes when Vijay unveils a cruel move: he uses Shivani’s photographs as advertisements for the airline, a betrayal that shatters trust. Shivani is thrown into a maelstrom of accusations, and she asserts that she will work to support the family herself. Ashok, feeling betrayed and humiliated, slaps and disowns her, and Shivani leaves the home she shared with them. The situation spirals further when Vijay suffers a violent episode and severely injures Ashok, whose hospitalization is followed by a chilling act—Vijay removes Ashok’s oxygen mask in Shivani’s presence, effectively killing him. Shivani tries to convince the police of Vijay’s guilt, but he engineers an alibi by bribing Inspector Arjun Singh [Kiran Kumar], a man who can bend the law to suit his interests.

Despite Arjun’s own warnings about Vijay’s wrongdoings, the power dynamics push Shivani into a corner, and Vijay’s relentless pursuit of Shivani continues even as she resists his advances. He becomes obsessed with the idea that she loves him and refuses to quietly fade from the scene. When Shivani cannot prove her innocence, she is convicted and sentenced to three years in prison. Pinky is placed under the care of Padmisha and Mohanlal, while Mohanlal’s mistreatment of Padmisha and Pinky worsens the family rift.

Inside the prison, Shivani meets Nisha Himani Shivpuri, her cellmate who was wrongly accused in a dowry murder. The two form a bond as they endure brutal conditions under a warden who presides with cruelty, coercing inmates into prostitution to satisfy political interests. Shivani’s attempts to expose the warden’s brutality are ignored, and when she faces retaliation, Inspector Arjun reveals to the warden that Shivani is the one who filed the complaint, widening the conflict and pushing Shivani further into isolation.

Mohanlal forces Padmisha to disown Pinky, and Padmisha’s resistance leads Mohanlal to cast them out, deepening Shivani’s longing for justice and revenge. Tragedy compounds when Vijay accidentally kills Shivani’s sister and daughter with a car accident, a revelation that steels Shivani’s resolve and makes revenge her sole focus. She understands that to survive, she must turn the table on those who harmed her. She confronts her fears, and when a politician’s night visit forces a prison guard to beat her and cause her to miscarry, the pain solidifies into a single, burning purpose: revenge.

With the timing of a calculated plan, Shivani engineers a night-long ritual in the jail that provides her with an alibi to escape accountability. She stalks and eliminates the prison warden by dragging her to the gallows and hanging her, a calculated act that leaves no clear trail and buys her future freedom. After three years, Shivani is released and begins to strike back at the people who ruined her life. She first ends Mohanlal by choking him with rupee notes and biting away a portion of his arm, a brutal display that sends a message to those who would stand in her way. When Inspector Arjun again crosses her path at a graveside—where she mourns her daughter—he steps on her grave and attempts to assault her in a barn. Shivani overpowers him and sets the barn on fire, a final act that leaves his fate sealed.

Rebuilding her life, Shivani discovers that Vijay and his mother have moved on, living in a sanatorium created by Padma’s wealth and influence. She travels to Tikamgarh, where she finds Vijay in a paralyzed state resulting from a car accident that claimed her sister and daughter. She chooses to serve and rehabilitate him, guiding him through recovery with a cold, quiet humanity. As Vijay regains movement, he pleads once more for Shivani to say she loves him and to marry him, but she responds with a decisive, painful resolve. She embraces him only to strike a fatal blow, stabbing him as a means to end the cycle of violence. In the tug-of-war that follows, they teeter on the edge of a cliff, Vijay clinging to Shivani’s leg. He warns that if he falls, he will take her with him, but Shivani, convinced that his death would erase the years of pain he caused, chooses to let go. They both fall to their deaths, and the story closes on the devastating cost of vengeance and the fragile line between love, control, and justice.
