Canudos, a remote northeastern Brazilian settlement founded by the messianic Antônio Conselheiro, was brutally crushed by the army, ending on October 5 1897 with the death of its last 30,000 residents. The film recounts the massacre through the eye of an English cannon, nicknamed “A Matadeira” by locals, hauled by twenty ox‑drawn teams across the backlands for a single, fateful shot.
