Abel, 47, a veteran of colonial and French wars scarred by countless battles, returns to his remote northern Portuguese village after a letter from his brother Peter warns that everything – even Teresa – has changed. He wanders the hills of his childhood, the old dog the sole reminder of the past, and learns Teresa will take part in the village Passion play. Driven by a dark resolve, Abel plans to eliminate her suitors one by one, hoping her death will occur during the performance.
