In San Diego, 1969, William discovers that his mother has been telling him he is 13 when he is actually 11. Elaine's strict ban on rock music and her fear of pop culture shapes his early worldview. The late revelation strains their relationship and foreshadows the rebellion to come.

Anita, now 18, moves to San Francisco to become a flight attendant, leaving William and Elaine behind. Her departure marks the first crack in the family’s fragile balance. The siblings’ divergent paths echo the pull of the rock world William will later chase.

In 1973, a fifteen-year-old William is inspired by Anita’s records and resolves to become a rock journalist. He writes freelance pieces for underground papers in San Diego and catches Lester Bangs's eye, who gives him a $35 assignment to review a Black Sabbath concert. Bangs's mentorship opens doors to real access, though backstage interactions remain guarded.

William edges into Stillwater's inner circle by getting backstage during the concert run and begins interviewing the band. Russell Hammond avoids him at first, while Jeff Bebe and others view him as 'the enemy.' The early friction, highlighted by the first Stillwater T-shirt, signals a looming clash within the group.

The record label brings in manager Dennis Hope to tackle venues and promoters, intensifying the band's machine. Penny must leave before New York, and her protégée band aids are gambled away in a poker game. Penny hides her devastation behind a bright facade, while the tour presses on.

Penny crashes a party at a New York restaurant where William announces the band will be featured on the cover of Rolling Stone. She storms off when her attempts to grab Russell’s attention backfire. William follows her to a hotel and saves her from overdosing on quaaludes.

On the next day, a plane hired by the band encounters severe weather, and long-hidden secrets surface as tensions flare between Jeff and Russell. William confesses his love for Penny during the crisis, and the plane makes a safe emergency landing in Tupelo. The scare alters the mood of the group and forces painful truths into the open.

Back in San Francisco, William struggles to finish his Rolling Stone article while Bangs urges candor and honesty. The editor is initially enthusiastic, but Russell lies to the fact-checker and the piece is killed. The professional setback crushes William’s spirit and tests his resolve.

Anita meets William at the airport and offers to take him anywhere; he instead chooses to return to San Diego. Elaine is glad to see them both and the family tries to reassemble its fragile balance. The road trip ends as the siblings reconvene at home.

Sapphire scolds Russell for betraying William, underscoring the moral costs of the rock world. Russell tracks Penny down, but she tricks him by giving William's address instead of her own. He arrives to confront William's mother, who had previously chastised him by phone.

William's article, after being validated by Russell, earns a Rolling Stone cover feature. The magazine publishes the piece, vindicating William's honesty and marking a rare success for the young writer. The moment cements his place in rock journalism, at least for a time.

Penny fulfills her long-standing fantasy of going to Morocco while Stillwater tours again by bus. The road life continues to orbit around the band and its entourage, with the journalistic chapter closed for now. Penny's dream signals the enduring pull of the rock world for all involved.
