Ajami

In the bustling Ajami district of Jaffa, a mosaic of cultures lives side‑by‑side under the weight of history and unspoken tension. The neighborhood’s narrow streets and crowded markets pulse with ordinary life—children playing, families sharing meals, neighbors exchanging gossip—yet an undercurrent of conflict shapes every interaction. Against this backdrop, the film follows a handful of residents whose personal struggles echo the larger discord that defines the city.

Omar, a young Israeli man, is driven by a need to address a personal loss that has left his world unsteady. Malek, a Palestinian refugee, wrestles with the urgent desire to secure medical care for his ailing mother, navigating a system that often seems indifferent to his plight. Dan—known locally as Dando—is a Jewish detective whose investigation into his brother’s disappearance pulls him deeper into the neighborhood’s tangled web, forcing him to confront loyalties he never expected to question. Meanwhile, Binj, a relatively affluent Palestinian, finds his heart divided by a forbidden love for a Jewish woman, an affection that challenges the boundaries imposed by community and tradition.
