Ashok Mehra's wife Purnima dies after giving birth to their daughter Mini, leaving him devastated. He slowly comes to accept his new duty as a father, but the pain of losing Purnima lingers. This tragedy becomes the catalyst for his future decisions about Mini's upbringing.

Several years pass and Ashok begins to rebuild his life, carrying on for the sake of Mini. He hides his grief behind a calm exterior and tells Mini that her mother may someday return from 'God's house' to comfort her. The lie is meant to keep Mini hopeful amid her loneliness.

Mini's longing for a mother becomes more acute, and her envy of others' maternal love leads to disruptive behavior. No school or governess can effectively manage her, and Ashok watches helplessly as her mood deepens. The household struggles to cope with her unfulfilled need for a mother.

To boost his cosmetics business, Ashok hires Raj Bedi to lead a new advertising campaign. Bedi accepts, attracted by the high price Ashok is willing to pay. The project sets the stage for a chain of events that will intertwine their lives with Radha and Mini.

While scouting models at the beach, Bedi discovers Radha and is drawn to her. They fall in love and eventually marry, changing the dynamics of the campaign and Bedi's career prospects. The marriage complicates Ashok's relationship with his model-turned-wife.

With Radha now his wife, Bedi hesitates to hand over the photos to Ashok and goes to great lengths to back out of the contract, even selling his possessions to cover the costs. The breach damages Bedi's reputation and dents his career. Ashok's campaign falters as a result.

Radha and Bedi struggle to build a modest life, and Radha's husband is soon bedridden, pressuring her to find work. She decides to lie about her marital status to secure employment and support her family. Her job search leads her to Ashok Mehra's office, where she is hired as a governess because she resembles the late Mrs. Mehra.

Radha begins tending to Mini, and the girl gradually warms to her new maternal presence. Ashok starts to feel drawn to Radha, unaware that she is married, and sees in her the mother Mini has longed for. The professional relationship begins to blur into something deeper.

Mini's bond with Radha grows beyond a caretaker-child dynamic, while Ashok's growing closeness to Radha triggers concern in Bedi. Chandu's meddling adds to the tension, and a confrontation among Ashok, Bedi, and Radha becomes likely as loyalties collide. The situation threatens to unravel the family.

Unable to bear the strain of the situation, Ashok sends Mini to live in a hostel to spare her further heartbreak. Radha and Ashok officially sever all ties, ending their complicated arrangement. The family is left fractured and uncertain about the future.

Radha learns that a lottery ticket she had purchased (through Ashok) has won, providing funds to help the Bedis and to pursue treatment for Bedi in America. The windfall paves the way for tentative reconciliation as truths begin to surface. Ashok meets the Bedis at the airport, where misunderstandings start to clear.

Seeing Mini's happiness but realizing he cannot give her the motherly love she needs, Ashok arranges for Mini to be adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Bedi. The adoption completes amid emotional farewells, and the film closes on Ashok's painful reflection: I loved you once, but lost you twice.
