In the Depression, Pete and Sidney have been engaged for three years, scrimping to afford a wedding while supporting their families. Both wrestle with mothers—Sidney’s cold mother seeks her own happiness, while Pete’s clingy mother urges Sidney to end it. Illness, poverty and temptation threaten their dream, as echoed by the song “After Tomorrow.”
