The Khan family, originally from Pakistan, have made the UK their home for decades, building a life in Glasgow that centers on family, faith, and the pull between tradition and personal desire. The parents envision a future where Jasmine, their proposed daughter-in-law from within the family, will join the household soon, and Casim continues to live at home as the house expands to accommodate a growing clan. Casim, Atta Yaqub, leads a double life that sparks a chain of events with a young music teacher named Roisin Hanlon, who has her own history with the local Catholic school where she once taught part-time. The moment Tahara is bullied at school and Casim rushes to help, the chaos pulls them into Roisin’s orbit after a guitar shatters in the school music room. The next day, Casim’s attempt to show his gratitude by bringing Roisin a new guitar quickly turns into something more intimate: he invites her into his world and the two begin a secret relationship. Roisin, who would soon be offered a full-time position at the school, finds herself entangled in a romance that challenges both of their worlds. Seeking a life of stability, Roisin accepts a Spain holiday arranged by Casim, believing it might be a simple escape. Casim, however, lies about his reasons for traveling to London for work and drags Roisin into a web of half-truths that threatens the harmony of the family. The days in Spain are bright and hopeful, a rare pause from the simmering disputes back home, but the truth soon unsettles Roisin: Casim’s parents have arranged for him to wed Jasmine, a future sister-in-law who has just entered Glasgow, a development that undercuts their romance. Back in Glasgow, Casim’s resolve strains his relationships with everyone around him. News travels quickly through the Khan community, and the domestic upheaval that stems from Casim’s relationship with Roisin appears as a veil of dishonor across the family’s reputation. Amar’s family pulls away from the engagement, while Rukhsana tries to mediate this crisis, urging Roisin to leave Casim. The school administration responds by transferring Roisin to a non-denominational school, effective immediately, which compounds the tension surrounding Casim and Roisin’s living situation. When Casim cannot be with Roisin due to work commitments, she locks him out of their apartment. He travels to his parents’ home, where the emotional temperature remains high, and Tahara’s courage to pursue journalism in Edinburgh grows louder as the family’s expectations continue to press against the young adults’ desires.
