Raj Rai Bahadur, Raj Kapoor, lives a privileged life with his widowed father, a successful businessman, and is sent to work in the countryside at Saraswati Dam. One day, his father visits him, and his late mother had wished for him to marry Chandra, Vijayalakshmi, the daughter of a wealthy family friend. Raj decides to write to Chandra, who ignores the letter, but Neelu, Nargis, acknowledges it and replies in Chandra's name. After a sequence of letters, Raj and Neelu fall in love, though Raj remains unaware that Neelu is the one behind the correspondence. Just then Raj is diagnosed with tuberculosis, the same disease that claimed his mother. Facing illness, he pretends that he never loved Neelu and even urges that she marry his physician friend, Dr. Kailash, Pran Sikand. He also flirts with Chandra to make Neelu believe that his feelings have changed. Chandra, moved by her heartbroken sister, decides to end her suffering. When the truth comes to light, Neelu accepts Raj as he is. Miraculously, Raj recovers, and the two begin a happy life together.
