Preeti Sharmila Tagore is a young doctor‑to‑be living in Mumbai with her widowed father, Heerachand Om Prakash. On a holiday to Simla, she meets Prem [Shashi Kapoor], a charming yet teasing amateur skater who quickly wins her heart. Their first moments are light and playful, but as they spend time together among the hills and markets, Preeti begins to feel a deep warmth for him. A spark grows, and Prem falls for her just as she starts to trust him in return. When they share a hilltop moment, the chemistry between them becomes undeniable, and their bond takes on a new, intimate depth.
Prem’s bold confession follows a pivotal sequence: he reveals that his closeness with her was driven by a desperate need to save her life, and he openly proposes. Preeti, moved by his sincerity, directs him to her father. Heerachand, protective and wary of the match, rejects the idea and even offers money to make him leave. Prem refuses to be bought, and he leaves a letter for Preeti at the hospital, explaining everything and asking her to come with him. But Heerachand intervenes, rewriting the note so that it reads as if Prem is asking for money to marry her. This cruel miscommunication shocks Preeti, who decides to forget him and depart for Bombay.
In Bombay, Preeti enters a new phase of life and becomes engaged to her longtime friend and admirer, Dr. Amar [Shatrughan Sinha], who leaves for Germany to pursue further studies. When she discovers she is pregnant, her father presses her to abort, but she refuses. The couple chooses to go to Khandala to give birth, while Prem stays there with his mother [Sulochana Latkar] and, unbeknownst to Preeti, takes responsibility for the child. The hospital payoff comes with heartbreak—Preeti is told the baby was stillborn, and she mourns deeply before returning to Bombay.
Years later, Prem arrives in Bombay with his son Rahul [Master Tito], starting a new life as a skating teacher. Rahul faces a cruel, physical challenge—polio—that leaves him unable to walk. In a crowded function, Preeti notices Prem again, and for a moment she believes he is married and has a son. At the same event, Amar declares he will not marry until he can help Rahul walk, and he dedicates himself to Rahul’s progress. Preeti grows increasingly fond of Rahul, not realizing that he is her own son. When Prem senses the truth, he understands that Heerachand altered the earlier letter, but he remains silent to protect Amar’s future.
Amar eventually learns the truth about Preeti and Prem, which unsettles him, yet Rahul’s improvement continues under Amar’s care. A dramatic turn comes when Prem is mortally wounded while saving Amar’s sister Tikki from a gang of goons. Before his surgery, he hands Rahul his wallet, insisting that his mother’s photograph be kept safe inside. Preeti sees the wallet, confronts her father, and he finally confesses that Rahul is her son and that the letter had been altered by Heerachand.
Amar acts to save Prem, and soon the families reconciliate. In the end, Preeti and Prem marry and raise Rahul, finding happiness together as a loving family.
