Based on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy‑tale “The Tinderbox,” the film follows an impoverished puppeteer who escapes his bleak world by crafting a story in which he becomes a daring soldier. Guided by a benevolent wizard, he discovers a magical flint, wins the love of a capricious princess who tests suitors with riddles, and fools her gold‑hungry king. While the imagined tale ends happily, reality does not, as his beloved reminds him: “Life is not a fairy tale.”
