A Summer Story

During a walking holiday in Devon, Frank Ashton twists his ankle and is helped at a farmhouse in Dartmoor. He remains there for a few days to recover, leaving his friend behind to continue their journey. Ashton quickly falls in love with Megan, the girl who cares for him at the farm.

Megan confesses her love to Ashton, and they consummate their relationship during his recovery. Their growing romance is marked by intimate moments and mutual affection. Ashton begins to plan to be with Megan permanently.

Before leaving Dartmoor, Ashton arranges to meet Megan again in Torquay and promises to marry her. He takes a train to the seaside town, intending to settle their future together. However, upon arrival, he learns his bank will not cash his cheque immediately.

Ashton waits in Torquay for his bank to verify his cheque but faces delays. During this time, he encounters Halliday, an old school friend, and his sisters. Ashton misses the train that would have taken him back to meet Megan as planned.

Halliday questions Ashton about his urgency to return and warns him that love can be idealized and destructive if not approached realistically. Ashton begins to have doubts about marrying Megan and about his impulsive decisions.

Megan, hopeful that Ashton will come back, waits at their agreed meeting spot. After hours of waiting with no sign of him, she decides to travel to Torquay, determined to find him and rekindle their relationship.

While on the beach with Stella, Ashton finally sees Megan among the crowds. He devises a plan to follow her discreetly, nearly catching her before hiding behind a building when she almost notices him.

Years later, Ashton is married to Stella and they drive through Devon. He visits the farm where he once loved Megan and learns that she returned heartbroken, later dying shortly after giving birth to their son, Frank.

At Megan's grave, Ashton discovers she had asked to be buried there, waiting for his return. He learns she died shortly after their separation, leaving behind her son Frank, whom she named after Ashton.

As Ashton and Stella pass by a young man herding sheep, he smiles at Ashton. The man is revealed to be Frank, Megan’s son, indicating that Ashton unknowingly encounters his child after many years.
