Miss Bentley has spent April sixteen years at a villa on Lake Como. In 1937, after her London artist father dies, she is the only guest among brash Americans. When Major Wilshaw arrives, she declines his cocktail invitation to help an Italian family's new nanny. Miss Beaumont flirts with the Major, whose passions stir, and Bentley sees him differently.
