In 1975 Chicago filmmakers Flaxman and Goldman were given free rein to document the making of the low‑budget adult film THE LAST AFFAIR. Neither the director—who imagined a Fellini‑Bergman mix—nor the cast, including future stars Betty Thomas and Ron Dean, had any industry experience. Shot in cinema‑vérité style, A LABOR OF LOVE humorously exposes on‑set hostility, performers’ insecurities, improvised substitutes for bodily fluids, and a director who openly loathes the project.
