A Distant Neighborhood

Thomas Verniaz is a middle-aged comic book artist whose creative stagnation mirrors the quiet dissatisfaction of his personal life. When an accidental detour strands him in the rural French town where he grew up, he finds himself wandering through the faded landmarks of his childhood. But what begins as a nostalgic detour takes an impossible turn after a moment of physical collapse at the cemetery where his mother lies buried.

Thomas awakens to find himself no longer a man in his fifties, but a teenager once more — transported four decades into the past, inhabiting his own younger body. The year is 1967, and suddenly his late mother is alive, his absent father is present, and his childhood friends surround him. It is a world he thought he had left behind forever, now startlingly vivid and within reach. Among the figures from his youth is Sylvie, a girl he once loved from a distance, offering him a second chance at connection he never dared to pursue.

Yet beneath the warmth of reunion lies the mystery that has haunted Thomas for decades: the unexplained departure of his father, Bruno, a quiet tailor who vanished from the family without a trace. As a boy, Thomas never understood why. Now, armed with decades of hindsight, he begins to see his parents’ marriage through new eyes — sensing tensions and secrets that his childhood self could never have grasped.
